Book of Enoch Bible Study Ep 3 | Fallen Angels, Fallen Men (Chapters 6-8)

How lawlessness among men and angels caused the Great Flood, what the fallen angels taught mankind, and how Enoch’s prophecy about violence and transgression becoming worse after the Flood is being fulfilled in our days.

This is part 3 of a full study of the Book of Enoch (also known as 1 Enoch). In this series, we’re reading through the entire Book of Enoch, providing commentary on each chapter, and discussing parallel Scriptures from the Bible.

Transcript:

In these next few chapters of Enoch, we’re going to read about why Father flooded the earth in the days of Noah. This information is important for us today not just for historical reasons, but because what happened before the flood is part of what our Father is going to be avenging in the last days.

We read in Genesis chapter 6, “It came to pass when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were fair, and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, ‘My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh, yet his day shall be a hundred and twenty years.’ There were giants in the earth in those days. And also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men and they bear children to them, the same became mighty men which revolved, men of renown. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually, and it repented the Lord that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart. And the Lord said, ‘I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast and the creeping thing and the fowls of the air, for it repenteth me that I have made them.’ But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.”

Those words which were recorded by Moses in the book of Genesis are the subject of the next few chapters of the Book of Enoch. And Enoch gives us more details on what exactly was going on in those days.

Enoch chapter 6 verse 1 says, “And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters and the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them and said to one another, ‘Come, let us choose wives from among the children of men and beget us children. And Semjaza, who was their leader, said unto them, ‘I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay thee penalty of a great sin.’”

So, we can see here that what these angels were about to do is something that they knew was wrong. They called it a sin before they even did it.

Verse 4, “And they all answered him and said, ‘Let us all swear an oath and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations, not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.” The word “imprecation” means curse. So, these angels are getting together and swearing that either they’re all going to join in on this great sin or they will all be cursed if they don’t do it.

It’s kind of twisted logic when you think about it because the penalty of a great sin is going to be a curse from God and they’re deciding that if anyone decides not to join in on this cursed sin that they’re about to do then, they will be cursed. Not a good place to be with a curse if you do and a curse if you don’t.

Verse 5, “Then sware they all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations.” So, by mutual curses upon it. “And they were in all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared.” If you’ve seen our timeline, we have the birth of Jared as occurring in 3723 BC and Enoch was on earth through 3198 BC. So, the days of Jared that Enoch is talking about would have likely been sometime after the birth of Jared but before Enoch was taken to heaven. So sometime between 3723 BC and 3198 BC.

So, they were in all 200 who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon. Mount Hermon is located in what they call now the Golan Heights and if you can picture the Sea of Galilee, it’s northeast. So, they descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon and they called it Mount Hermon because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations, curses upon it.

The word “Hermon” in Hebrew is spelled chet resh mem vav nachash. And it comes from the root word “charam”. Now “charam” in the Bible is most commonly translated as utterly destroy and as devote something to utter destruction.

So, the reason the angels call this mountain the mountain of utter destruction and something devoted to destruction is because they all agreed that they would be under a curse if they didn’t go through with the sin that they were about to commit.

Verse 7, “And these are the names of their leaders: Semiazaz, their leader, Arakiba, Rameel, Kokabiel, Tamiel, Ramiel, Danel, Ezeqeel, Baraqijal, Asael, Armaros, Batarel, Ananel, Zaqiel, Samsapeel, Satarel, Turel, Jomjael, Sariel. These are their chiefs of tens. And all the others together with them took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. And they became pregnant, and they bear great giants, whose height was three thousand ells.”

So here we see that the angels went through with their sinful deed. Against God’s will, they went and they took wives for themselves and they began to also teach them lawless knowledge, which we will get into very, very shortly. But let’s pause for a second here because this portion of verse 2 where it talks about the height of the children of the fallen angels and the women that they married is a bit of a disputed verse.

So, I want to talk a little bit about the different versions of the Book of Enoch. In our first Enoch Bible study video, we mentioned that Enoch’s book was preserved by the Ethiopians in their language, which is a Semitic language that has a lot of similarities to Hebrew. Now, the version that we are reading together was translated by a man named R.H. Charles back in the 1800s and this version is in the public domain, which is the number one reason why we use it because we want to be able to give it away for free. And if you want a copy of the Book of Enoch, we have it for free on our website.

Decades after Charles made his translation, the Book of Enoch was found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. And in the Dead Sea Scrolls, there were copies and fragments of the Book of Enoch in the Aramaic language. And so those copies predated the Ethiopian copies that R.H. Charles had originally translated. So, since Charles’ day, there have been people who have made updated translations looking at the fragments in Aramaic and in the other languages that they found and incorporating some of those things into their more modern translations.

One really cool thing about the Book of Enoch and about the Ethiopians who preserved it is that once the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, you could compare the fragments of the Book of Enoch that were found there. And I believe it’s about one-third of the entire book of Enoch that has been found so far in the scrolls.

And so, if you compare what we found in the Dead Sea Scrolls to the writings that the Ethiopians preserved, so the Book of Enoch in the Ge’ez language, you can see how well they preserved the book because even though those versions were hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years apart, the content was basically the same. So, we can rest assured that all the versions that we have of Enoch, whether it’s the one that was translated from the Ethiopian or whether we’re talking about a translation that’s incorporating the Aramaic from the Dead Sea Scrolls, they’re all good translations.

So, getting back to Enoch chapter 7, verse 2, which says, “And they became pregnant and they bear great giants whose height was 3,000 ells.” That last part, whose height was 3,000 ells is a matter of great dispute because no one’s really sure what an ell is as a unit of measure and a lot of people have assumed that an ell is equal to a cubit. Now if that was the case, then these giants that Enoch is talking about would be as big as a mountain and that sounds incredibly unbelievable. But in some of the newer translations that incorporate information from the Dead Sea Scrolls, we have a different understanding of this verse.

And so, where in the version that we’re reading it says the height with 3,000 ells, in the newer translation it says, “And to the giants were born Elioud.” I do think that the Elioud translation is probably correct and that’s because we don’t think here at Original Hebrew that the giants were anywhere near the size of mountains. We just don’t think that they were that big. So, we think what Enoch is saying here is that the angels, they married women and they had offspring who were giants. The word for giants is in the Bible and in Enoch, that word is Nephilim. And so, they created Nephilim. And then the generation that was born to the Nephilim was the Elioud.

So, the women became pregnant and they bear great giants, i.e. Nephilim, and to the Nephilim were born Elioud. Verse 3, “… who consumed all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against them and devoured mankind.” So here you’ve got giants eating man. Not good times on earth before the Flood, but obviously Enoch was taken care of because he is righteous and our Father always takes care of the righteous no matter how bad it is on this earth.

Verse 5, “And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another’s flesh, and drink the blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.”

So not only were the Nephilim and the Elioud and whatever you want to call the subsequent generations of these illicit creatures, not only were they turning against mankind and actually eating mankind, they also, it says, sinned against animals. Now that could mean a couple of things. That could mean that they were violent against the animals. But I do see throughout the Bible that angels were made by God where they’re able to change form.

So sometimes angels will appear like a human, sometimes as a wind, sometimes as a flame of fire. Sometimes when the prophets wrote the Old Testament, they see angels with faces of animals. So, I think that part of what Enoch is saying here is that the angels changed form into animal form and just as they mated with women, they mated with animals and the reason that I think that is because in Genesis 6 it says, “And God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt.” That word for corrupt is shachat, and it means ruined and destroyed. “God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was ruined and destroyed, for all flesh had ruined and destroyed His way upon the earth.” When He sent the judgment of the Flood, it was not only on man, but it was on animals. He destroyed all flesh, including the animals, because all flesh, including the animals, was destroyed and ruined. Shachat. And I believe that this verse in the Book of Enoch is telling us why. The animals were ruined by these lawless angels.

Chapter 8, verse 1, “And Azazel taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all coloring tinctures.”

Now Azazel has not been mentioned before in the Book of Enoch, and you will see later that this angel, Azazel, will be singled out by our Father because it was through what He taught mankind that Father says the earth was destroyed. So, if we were to put the teachings of Azazel into a simplified category or a few categories, it would be war, money, and beauty. So, through these three things, the whole earth was destroyed.

In a few verses, you’re going to see that all of these things that Azazel taught and that the other angels taught to mankind, these were all things that men were striving to learn. Man wanted to sin. He wanted to learn to make war so he could kill his fellow man is the information that we get from Enoch. It’s not like the angels came and forced sin upon man. It was in man’s heart already.

Verse 2, “And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways. Semjaza taught enchantments, and root-cuttings, Armaros the resolving of enchantments, Baraqijal taught astrology, Kokabel the constellations, Ezeqeel the knowledge of the clouds, Araqiel the signs of the earth, Shamsiel the signs of the sun, and Sariel the course of the moon. And as men perished, they cried, and their cry went up to heaven.”

Later on in the Book of Enoch, in chapter 69, he tells us a few more things that the angels taught to mankind. And we actually went through this entire list and this whole topic in our video called “Adam and the Nephilim”. So, if you’re interested in this subject, you might want to take a look at that video, but we’re going to go through the list here and we’ll talk about a couple specific things that the angels taught man. Enoch says the angels taught the blows of death, the weapons of death, the bitter and the sweet and all the secrets of their wisdom, writing with ink and paper. Now when we mentioned this in our “Adam and the Nephilim” video, we got a comment saying something along the lines of, “Well, what’s wrong with writing?” and that comment got a lot of thumbs up. So, a lot of people agreed that, you know, there’s nothing bad with writing. So, what was the problem with angels teaching men how to write?

So, we’re going to look at from chapter 69 what is written specifically about that teaching and we’ll talk about the problem with writing. In chapter 69, we read that because of writing, “Thereby many sinned from eternity to eternity and until this day, for men were not created for such a purpose, to give confirmation to their good faith with pen and ink. For men were created exactly like the angels to the intent that they should continue pure and righteous, and death, which destroys everything, could not have taken hold of them. But through this their knowledge they are perishing.”

If you think about it, a lot of what mankind has written down over centuries has been lies, and those lies have been passed down as if they were knowledge from God, to the point where today we have an entire generation, if not many generations, of people who don’t believe in God. They don’t believe that He created everything, they don’t believe that the Bible was written by His prophets, and even Christians today don’t believe that the books that Yeshua said were written by Moses were actually written by Moses.

Lies like that are able to proceed and be taught to millions of people because of writing. So, Father, in His knowledge, His foreknowledge of everything, He uses writing and He had his prophets write things down so that we also have the truth. But there’s no question that the art of writing has indeed been used by mankind since back in the days of Jared for bad purposes and for unrighteous purposes.

Let’s keep going with the list of what the angels taught man. Wicked smitings of spirits and demons, the smitings of the embryo in the womb that it may pass away, meaning abortion. The smitings of the soul, the bites of the serpent, the smitings which befall through the noontide heat. And there’s one other thing in chapter 69 that’s a bit hard to translate, so we’ll save it for when we get to that section of Enoch.

So basically, the angels taught men many different ways to kill each other, to kill you in your spirit, in your soul, to detach you from our Father and to physically kill you. They ruined His earth. They ruined mankind. Mankind was all in on this. They wanted this info. But the angels, they brought it down. So, there’s a great judgment that is going to befall all of these angels, which we will get to shortly, but a couple of points before we get to the judgment part of it.

Try to understand where Father was coming from back in these days. He had just built a house. All of creation is a house that Father built. For those of you who have studied with us about Creation Week, He uses the letter “beyt,” which is in Hebrew is house, to talk about creation. And so, you picture all of creation as this beautiful house that Father built and He filled it with beautiful things, with beautiful lights, with stars, with living creatures who He blessed and who He told to multiply and made it so that they could multiply, who He planted good food for, with men and women who He also blessed, who He fashioned with His own hands, and He planted things for them. So, He made this beautiful place, and then you’ve got this group of angels that comes down to pollute and to pervert all of it. And they poisoned His creation. And they taught the people that He had created how to kill each other and shed blood all over the planet and they ruined even the animals that Father made.

So, Father is just. When you see Him judging something or someone, stay on His side for that judgment because there are things that you don’t know that only He sees, and we’ve got a great big judgment coming that we will all see at the end of days. And part of that judgment has to do with what happened back here, which we’ll get to. But if you were to just read Genesis, you don’t get the sense of everything horrible that was going on. But for those of you who are still listening, I’m glad because by this, if you haven’t heard these words before by this, by hearing Enoch, you get to see that your Father is just and when He makes judgment, it’s for a reason.

They ruined His earth and as bad as it was before the Flood, so as bad as it was in the days of Noah, it’s going to be worse in our days. He says, “For I know that violence must increase on the earth and a great chastisement be executed on the earth.” That great chastisement was the Flood. “And all unrighteousness come to an end,” so came to an end at the Flood. “Yea, it shall be cut off from its roots, and its whole structure be destroyed.” And now he’s going to talk about after the Flood. He says, “And unrighteousness shall again be consummated on the earth, and all the deeds of unrighteousness and of violence and transgression shall prevail in a two-fold degree.” Meaning it’s going to be even worse in our days than it was before the Flood.

So just out of curiosity, I looked up some stats and I’ll share them with you just about violence and about conflict on this earth. This is according to an entity called the ACLED, which is the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data. They say that 1 in 8 people are estimated to have been exposed to conflict in 2024. That’s pretty high. They say 50 countries in the world have extreme, high or turbulent levels of conflict.

They say the levels of violence right now are unprecedentedly high with several record-breaking months in the last year. They say that conflict rates are expected to increase with a 20% increase being likely. Now, as for the smitings of the embryo in the womb that it may pass away, so as for abortions, which the angels taught man back in the day, this is something that I come back to over and over again every now and then. It’s a website and it shows you a live count of all the abortions in the world and it’s insane to just see these numbers because every time a number changes, it’s a death. Now it’s just a number changing to us, but our Father formed us in our wombs. And there are over 20 million people who our Father formed this year so far who have been killed.

So, I come back to this every now and then because I want to stay on my Father’s side and I know that His judgment is coming and I happen to live in a very beautiful place where I hear birds chirping, I see beautiful trees and I don’t want to ever lose sight of the fact that His judgment is coming for all the blood that is in this land and I want to stay on His side when He judges the world and so looking at this is just one thing that helps me to stay on His side and to say, “Maranatha and Hallelujah, my Father, do what you got to do and stop all of this.” Even if I’m having a beautiful day, cut off my beautiful day and do what you got to do.

Now if you are someone who has had an abortion or if you’ve caused someone to have an abortion or if you’ve done any transgression or any sin and you’ve repented and you’re His kid now, you’ve repented meaning you’ve turned from it, you don’t do it anymore, and you’re His kid now. The scriptures tell us that He has forgiven you and He doesn’t even remember what you did. So just as a suggestion, stop reminding Him of what you did.

He doesn’t remember it, so stop reminding Him. Your transgressions are removed from you as far as the east is from the west. So, be at peace. But I bring all of this up because His judgment is coming and let’s stay on His side and let’s let Him do what He has to do to bring an end to the unrighteousness, the violence, and the transgression.

While all of this mayhem was happening on the earth before the Flood, in large part because of the fallen angels, Father’s good angels were seeing all of this happen. And Father’s good angels are His eyes. That’s why Enoch calls the angels watchers. They see things and they report back to Father and they do Father’s will. Now our Father can see everything Himself, but thankfully He gives tasks to His servants. Whether His servant is an angel or a man or a woman, He gives us things to do. And part of what His servants, the angels do, is they watch and they are His eyes.

If you want some scriptures for this, I’m going to put a list up on screen for you. But Daniel, as one example, Daniel called the angels watchers, just like Enoch called them watchers. And the word that Daniel used was the word “ir”. So, here’s a quick Paleo-Hebrew quiz for those of you who study Paleo-Hebrew with us. How would you spell the Hebrew word for watcher? Would it be with the picture of an eye or the picture of an arm?

The answer is the picture of an eye. They see and they watch. They are the “iyrim,” the watchers. The word “ir” is from the same root as the Hebrew word “ur,” which means awake. And when you’re awake, your eyes are open. So, you can see here how – one example of how Hebrew is a very beautiful and very picturesque language that God Himself made for us, knowing in advance that the angels would take the knowledge of writing, which is something that Father invented for His own books in heaven, and they brought it down and taught man. He knew that was going to happen. And so, He created this language which helps us to better understand the good words that were written down by His prophets.

So, the angels, the watchers, are seeing all of this stuff going on and all this craziness before the flood and we’re going to read what their account is next time.
